Carbon Monoxide, CO Poisoning: The Ancient Silent Enemy

Updated on: September 10, 2025

Join the Toronto Public Library for a fascinating and critical lecture series, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: The Ancient Silent Enemy, presented by award-winning forensic toxicologist James Wigmore. This series of four events across the city will delve into the deadly history and ever-present dangers of carbon monoxide (CO), providing attendees with life-saving knowledge on how to prevent CO poisoning.

Carbon monoxide (CO) has bedeviled humanity since the invention of fire. It is a silent, odourless, non-irritating toxic gas produced by the incomplete combustion of wood, gasoline, charcoal, coal, natural gas, and other fuels. It causes death and injury by asphyxiation, and its impact on history is far greater than commonly known. This lecture will explore how CO poisoning has been a silent actor in historical events, claiming figures such as Sylvia Plath, two Roman emperors, and even Cleopatra. Mr. Wigmore will connect this ancient history to the current dangers we face today, from using generators during power outages to the risks associated with tents and RVs while on vacation.
